#1 Chanin Wine Company “Bien Nacido” Pinot Noir 2008:  The man of balance. It has the breadth of a great California wine without being about fruit. Instead, it's more about the tension in the flavors than the flavors themselves.  $48

#2 Silvio Giamello Barbaresco “Vincenziana” 2006:  NYT No. 1 bottle was clearly an old-school wine. Its pale red color, rimmed with orange at the edge, was a giveaway, as was the delicate, nuanced fragrance of flowers, tar and minerals. $45

#3 Domaine Huet Vouvray “Le Mont” Sec 2010:  Very pure in character, a wine that expresses the chalk terroir. Minerality and complexities of bright acidity, flavors of pear juice and grapefruit presage a final hint of honey. $39

#4 Michel Gassier Cercius Blanc 2010:  70% Grenache Blanc, 30% Sauvignon Blanc. Organic. Aged on the lees in concrete vat. 25 year old vines. Rich, ripe almost honey-like nose with prominent mineral character. $16.50

#5 Honig Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley 2010:  Attractive green-ish hue along with notes of melons, white currants, figs and a hint of citrus oil. Made in a refreshing, medium-bodied, crunchy style with excellent purity. $17

#6 Antione Arena “Carco” Patrimonio Corsica 2008:  Patrimonio Carco Rouge, from Niellucciu (1ha). Niellucciu (Corsican spelling) vines are the descendants of Sangiovese vines brought to Patrimonio by Pisans in the 12th century. "Niel" in Corsican means black, and "lucciu" is an endearing term for something small, thus the name given to the grape for its dark color and small berries. $54

#7 Domaine de la Janasse Cotes du Rhone Villages 2009:  The potentially outstanding 2009 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Terre dArgile (a blend of 75% Grenache and the rest mostly Mourvedre with a touch of Carignan) reveals a dense purple color along with notes of camphor, charcoal, truffles, black cherries and black currants. $23

#8 Bruno Colin ChassagneMontrachet Rouge Vielles Vignes 2009:  Bruno’s style shows beautiful balance, both aromatically and texturally, while showcasing the delicate minerality and nuanced complexity of each vineyard. $39

#9 Owen Roe “Abbot’s Table” Columbia Valley 2009:  25% Zinfandel, 20% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, 13% Grenache, 7% Blaufrankish, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec,1% Merlot. Always a favorite, and always just a little different! This very balanced and smooth Abbot's Table has the signature velvety mouth feel with a lattice of gentle tannins to support generous ripe flavors of bold red and black fruit, plums, and dark cherries. There's just a hint of spice and white pepper to give the finish a lasting lift.  $27

#10 Markus Huber “Hugo” Sparkling Rose NV: This sparkling rose is Zweigelt/Pinot Noir that is fresh and lively. Lots of fresh raspberries and strawberries on the nose with a creamy palate of fruit and hints of rose petals and a dry, slightly mineral finish. A spectacular refreshing sparkler with a great price tag. $16.50

GIFT CERTIFICATES . . .

By far the best possible gift you can get a serious wine lover, someone who knows what they like, is the chance to go get it themselves. There's always one bottle (or a dozen) that serious wine lovers have been coveting, and the opportunity to buy it without agonizing over whether they really need it.  So forget about all those accessories, Don't fall for the trap of buying wine books (most wine lovers would rather drink than read).  And for Pete's sake, please don't buy any wine. That's our job.  Now go enjoy your holidays, and make sure that your favorite wine lover shares some of their favorite wine with you. That's what holidays are all about!
