top 10 wines of 2013 @ WWS

Occhipinti SP68 Sicilia 2012
- Arianna Occhipinti is a bit of a burgeoning rock star in the natural wine industry. The wines she crafts in Vittoria, Sicily, in the island’s southeastern corner, are bold and pure.  Named for the road going past the winery, SP68 is a blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato. A perfect balance of power and finesse; the Nero d'Avola imparts rich dark fruits and the Frappato adds a high-toned raspberry note. $31.50

Powers Coyote Vineyard Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Wahluke Slope 2009- deep, opaque purple color that eases into some bright ruby along the edges.  The nose is a lovely combination of cedar, dark chocolate, anise and fresh ground black pepper.  The taste is a veritable explosion of ripe black fruit up front, ripe plum, blackberries and cherry, but not nearly as sweet as some of the more "jammy" wines you might have had.  The rich fruit transitions smoothly to some nice minerality midpalate, along with wonderful notes of dark chocolate and Asian spice.  The finish is just stunning, as the well structured tannins support a rich dry finish that seems to go on for a minute or more. $28

Giuseppe Quintarelli Primofiore 2009- Primofiore is a blend of the customary Valpolicella suspects--Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, Primofiore, which means “first press,” gets the juice after the first-run Amarone has run off, adding depth and complexity. Juicy, fresh, and vibrant, Primofiore is the easily accessible Quintarelli, and a delicious wine with flavors of cherry, olives, spices and oak. All the mastery, less money. $65

Ch. D’Epire Savennieres Cuvee Special 2011- Château d'Epiré owns vineyards at the highest elevation in the appellation of Savennières, planted in schist overlooking the Loire River. Their Cuvée Spéciale is a blend of their best parcels, mostly from their vineyard right above Coulée de Serrant, from old vines averaging 40 years. The grape is Pineau de la Loire, more commonly known as Chenin Blanc, and while the wine is bone dry, refreshing and distinctly flinty, it is also round, deep, and generous, with a complex flavor profile that develops slowly over time. Epiré's Savennières is a sophisticated wine, an intellectual wine, and it remains extremely inexpensive for what it delivers. $30

Marcel Lapierre Morgon 2012- Decomposed granite comprises most of their eleven hectares, and the vines are an average of 45 years of age. Grapes are picked at the last possible moment to obtain the ripest fruit, which is a trademark of the estate style. The Lapierres age their wines on fine lees for at least nine months in oak foudres and fûts ranging from three to thirteen years old. These wines are the essence of Morgon: bright, fleshy fruit with a palatable joie de vivre that was undoubtedly inherited from their creator. In the words of KLWM salesperson, “They are meant to be devoured.” $30

Lopez Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva Rioja 2001- 75% tempranillo, 15% garnacha and 5% each of graciano and mazuelo  Combine old vines, traditional winemaking and the stunning 2001 season - then wait nine years. What you end up with is a wine built in four dimensions, the power and density of fruit rounded by time, the graceful hand of the winemaker capturing the season in subtle scents of rose and cherry-skin tannin. Everything about the wine is gentle while remarkably long. $47

Dirty & Rowdy Semillon 2012-. This wine has a salty, lime and jalapeno thing going on, coupled with under-ripe, almost crunchy peach flavors punching up through a rich, honeyed texture  (without any sweetness). A resinous, pine forest scent cues up at the finish and promises this is only going to get more interesting with a little age in the bottle. $30

Guido Porro Barolo Vigna Lazzairasco 2008- with an inner sweetness, perfumed fruit and soft, silky tannins,  this is Serralunga’s best with elegance and refinement. Bright flavors of talc, fresh herbs and roses linger on the magnificent finish. $49

Evesham Wood Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2012- Produced from sustainably grown grapes in non-irrigated vineyards (Illahe, Eola Springs, Hidden Rocks and Mahonia). Aged 11 months in 10% new French oak barrels. Unfiltered. · Light in color with a reddish hue. Good aroma volume of strawberries, cherries, sandalwood and dried red rose petals. Tasty core of red berries, red cherries and red plums with a respectable mid palate attack. Elegantly styled and forward drinking with a cherry-filled and refreshing finish. $22

Chateau La Roque Pic Saint Loup 2010- 60 Grenache, 25 Syrah, 15 mourvedre- Deep garnet robe, generous bouquet with aromas of red berries and ripe fruits. Large and rounded on the palate, very fruity, with a lingering and unctuous finish.  It’s the brightness that keeps me coming back to this. $18.50
