This is once again an amazing value. $16.69 New Find of the Month : Bodegas Ramon Bilbao Rioja Tempranillo Crianza 2004 This juicy red offers lively black cherry and blueberry flavors. Collector’s Corner: The Best Montalcino has to Offer! Brunello di Montalcino is not only touted as one of the best growing regions in Italy, but simply as one of the best in the world. As was the case throughout continental Europe, Montalcino in 2003 experienced a brutally hot, dry year. Montalcino is a large area that is home to an extraordinary range of terrains and microclimates, so generalizations are always tricky. The simple fact is that the 2003 Brunellos show very little 2003 character. That may sound like a puzzling statement, but readers should remember that the vast majority of Brunellos are made by consulting oenologists whose professional training and expertise allows them to make excellent, even outstanding, wines in just about any vintage. In short, 2003 looks to be an excellent vintage for drinking over the near-term. The typical "10 Year Rule" is flip flopped this time; instead of waiting ten years to drink these beauties, you should rather drink them within ten years. Our experience tasting through the 2003’s has shown us beautiful wines that are amazingly balanced and accessible. While a few years of cellaring will surely give these wines some justice, you can pull a "Raul" and crack one early and not feel like you done a disservice to the wine. As for Rossos, 2006 was an outstanding vintage. Rosso di Montalcino can be made in a variety of styles, from simple, fresh wines made to be enjoyed without much fanfare, to more important versions that are essentially declassified Brunello that producers have deemed not worthy of their top designation. 2006 was a hot vintage, but the last month of the growing season saw cooler nighttime temperatures, which allowed growers to harvest in optimal conditions. The 2006 Rossos have plenty of generosity and ripeness in their fruit, but are also wonderfully balanced. Now through Sunday June 8th receive the "Wolfepacker" price on all of these wines from bottle one. As with every vintage, these wines are extremely limited so don’t hesitate to buy as they will surely be gone.
2003 Collosorbo Brunello di Montalcino Smoke, tar, earthiness and toasted oak emerge from Collosorbo’s brooding 2003 Brunello di Montalcino, which is unusually powerful in this vintage. Today the wine comes across as surprisingly fresh with a perfumed inner sweetness to the fruit that gives the mid-palate an attractive juiciness. Although the tannins could use a little more polish, this is a superb effort from oenologist Paolo Caciorgna and Collosorbo in 2003. Regular Price: $60 Wolfepacker Price: $54 2006 Collosorbo Rosso di Montalcino Characterized by its seductive aromatics and layered fruit, the 2006 Rosso di Montalcino. This is a soft, caressing style of Rosso that presents the feminine side of Sangiovese in its sweet, ripe red fruit, tobacco, spices and toasted oak. The tannins are firm, yet well-integrated and the wine offers compelling overall balance. Simply, put, this an outstanding Rosso that readers won’t want to miss. Regular Price: $29 Wolfepacker Price: $26 2003 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino Pertimali’s 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is once again among the small number of wines being made in Montalcino that offers real character. This intense, powerful Brunello exhibits the essence of flowers, tar, smoke, dark cherries and wild herbs as it opens to reveal superb depth and concentration. The tannins of the vintage are present, but the wine’s sheer richness provides more than enough balance. A surprisingly fresh, long finish rounds out the wine. Regular Price: $79 Wolfepacker Price: $71 2006 Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Rosso di Montalcino Pertimali's cask-aged 2006 Rosso di Montalcino captures the essence of Sangiovese from Montalcino in its generous black cherries, underbrush, smoke, tar and licorice. A powerful, serious Rosso, it offers great length as well as superb overall harmony. All of Pertimali's Montalcino vineyards are Brunello designated and this Rosso exhibits all of the hallmarks of the estate's top wines in miniature. It is a terrific effort from Pertimali. Regular Price: $39 Wolfepacker Price: $35 2003 Ciacci Piccolomini d Aragona Brunello di Montalcino The estate’s medium-bodied 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is made in an accessible, forward style. Dark cherries, tobacco, earthiness and tar nuances all flow from the glass in this poised, feminine expression of Sangiovese from the southern part of Montalcino. The wine shows outstanding persistence and a pretty note of freshness that rounds out the finish. Regular Price: $70 Wolfepacker Price: $63 2003 Az Agr Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino The 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is very representative of the house style in its intense expression of ripe dark fruit, menthol, leather, chocolate and spices. It offers superb richness and depth, with notable complexity for a wine of its size. Another year of bottle age should help smooth the tannins yet I wouldn’t wait too long to drink this wine, as it will likely offers its best drinking relatively early. Regular Price: $67 Wolfepacker Price: $60 2006 Az Agr Uccelliera Rosso di Montalcino Cortonesi’s 2006 Rosso di Montalcino is a serious wine. This plush, deep Rosso exudes terrific energy in its plush, dark fruit, minerals, tar and smoke, with outstanding balance and an utterly irresistible personality. Cortonesi typically blends a fair amount of run-off juice from his Brunello into the Rosso, which gives this wine an extra level of depth and complexity compared to most Rossos on the market. Regular Price: $30 Wolfepacker Price: $27 2003 La Potazzine (Gorelli - formerly Due Portine) Brunello di Montalcino The 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is fresh, vibrant and perfumed in its expression of violets, black cherries, licorice and spices. Medium in body, it offers outstanding balance and well-integrated tannins in a poised style that shows notable clarity and precision. I would have never guessed this to be a 2003 had I not known the vintage beforehand. This classically built Brunello was aged in casks of various sizes. Regular Price: $75 Wolfepacker Price: $67 2006 La Potazzine (Gorelli - formerly Due Portine) Rosso di Montalcino Always a reliable bottling, Le Potazzine’s 2006 Rosso di Montalcino offers up enticing aromatics and super-ripe dark fruit supported by firm, yet well-integrated tannins. It is aged in a combination of casks and smaller, used French oak barrels. Drink this stylish Rosso over the next two to three years. Regular Price: $37 Wolfepacker Price: $33 Should you no longer wish to subscribe to "Wet Noses" please; either e-mail us your name and e-mail address or call us and ask us to remove your name from our list
